Obituary

Alvin Clark was born on March 15, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  He was the third child born to the late Alfred and Alma Clark.  There were ten children in the family; Altonal, Allan, Alvin, Alfred, Calvin, Matlean, Carl, Ruth, Bernard, and Clyde.  Alvin was reared in the Hill District.  He attended McKelvy Elementary School, Herron Hill Junior High, and Schenley High School from which he graduated in June 1943.  As a child, Alvin and his family attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he received a wonderful Christian beginning by attending Sunday school, regular church services, and bible reading at home. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the military to serve in World War II.  He served from 1943-1947.  He saw service in the United States, England, France, Belgium, and Germany.  Alvin was released from the military in 1947 and returned home to Pittsburgh.

Upon returning home, he became employed by the Pittsburgh Public School District in 1947.  He started out as a helper and worked his way up to become the lead custodian at Miller Elementary School, Herron Hill Junior High School, Gladstone High Scholl, and finally Peabody High School from which he retired in January 1987 after serving for 40 years in the Pittsburgh School System. During that time, Alvin joined Central Baptist Church and remained active for over 60 years.  In 2008, he was honored for his long membership.  He is also a member of the March Birthday Club and the Senior Club.  Alvin was also an avid football fan with the Pittsburgh Steelers being his favorite team.  For many years, he held season tickets. In 1949. Alvin was married to the late Gloria Green.  She was truly the love of his life.  They met while they were both students at Schenley High School.  After being married 19 years, they became the proud parents of their only son, Alan Clark.  Gloria passed in February 1997. He loves his garden and grew the most beautiful and delicious tomatoes, most of which he gave to away to his relatives, friends, and neighbors.  He would do anything for you.  Alvin was a very kind and giving person.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings. Alvin leaves to cherish his memories, a son, Alan Clark, daughter in law Sabrina; four grandchildren; sister-in-law Doris Nash; nephew Derrick Clark; his family of Detroit, Michigan; and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at West Funeral Home.  Visitation: Wednesday, July 27, 2022   4PM-8PM.     Service: Thursday, July 28, 2022 11 AM.  Interment: Homewood Cemetery
