Obituary

Bernice Coleman Whiting, 91, peacefully passed away on March 11, 2023 at 1:58a.m. at Highland Park Care Center.

Bernice was born November 21, 1931 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The oldest daughter of the late Willie Coleman and Cornelia Williams Coleman.

Bernice grew up in the Pittsburgh area & attended Pittsburgh Public Schools. She was a dedicated member of the Rodman Baptist Church, where she was an usher for many years. Bernice worked for Dr. Edward & Miriam Bamonte for 40+ years & they became her second family. She was a former member of the Merry Makers Women's Club and she traveled extensively with them.

Bernice was known to be an excellent swimmer and loved to talk about how she once dived off one of the highest diving boards in the area. One of her favorite things to do was dance, especially line dancing, she always knew the latest line dances and usually better than the young adults.

She was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and loved any and everything to do with her hometown team. She loved playing her handheld casino games. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and many times she would travel to Ohio to spend it with her son and his family.

Those that knew Berniece knows that she was a very vibrant and stylish person that always wore the latest styles with perfectly styled. She will also be remembered as a great cook that loved preparing great meals for her family and friends.

Bernice loved life and she lived her life her way.

Bernice is survived by her only Son, David (Mary) Coleman, 2 sisters, Rosa Coleman and Carleen Matthews. 5 grandchildren, David Jr (Kathy) Coleman, Marcus (Shannon) Coleman, Andrea Bernice (Shawn) Stanford, Kendal (Jamilla) Coleman and James (Temeka) Wilkes. 15 great-grand children and 7 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by and welcomed into heaven by her parents, her husband Otha's Whiting. Her son James Coleman. Her Brothers, Eddie, Frank, John Earl Coleman and sisters Marion Wilson and Francis Coleman. And Grandson Allen Coleman.

The family would like to thank the Highland Park Care Center where she spent her final days, for the excellent care they gave her while there.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church, 6111 Rodman St., Pittsburgh, PA 15206. Visitation: 9:30am to 11am, service: 11am. Interment: Allegheny Cemetery.
