Obituary

Louise Aquilla Evans was born December 24, 1933 to the late Dora Anderson Satterfield and Willie Mitchell in Little Egypt (Stokes County, North Carolina).  After her mother passed away, she and her brother (James Mitchell) were relocated to Pittsburgh to live with their Aunt Mary Lassiter in The Hill District.  There, she attended Miller Elementary School and Fifth Avenue High School.  After high school, Louise enrolled in Montefiore Nursing School and obtained her practical nursing degree.  She was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, former Director of Christian Education, former Director of Vacation Bible School, and a member of the Senior Choir.  On her way to church, she would occasionally walk past the late Jasper King Evans, Jr., sitting on a stoop in polished leather slippers.  After a few attempts to start a conversation with her, she finally agreed to get to know him if he would attend church with her.  He agreed, but only after he changed into his "good shoes."  On July 4, 1952, she married Jasper Evans and gave birth to 4 children: Barbara, Patrick, Douglas, and Amy.  They would continue attending Ebenezer Baptist Church together for over 64 years.  She was prominently known as a featured subject in the critically acclaimed award-winning documentary, Wylie Avenue Days.

Louise Evans departed this life on October 6, 2022 at 1:40 am in the very same manner in which she lived her life, peacefully.  She is survived by her 4 children: Barbara (William), Patrick (Gwendolyn), Douglas (Kesha), and Amy (Mark).  6 grandchildren: William Jr., Nathan, Cynthia, Asya, Douglas Jr., and Adia.  2 great grandchildren: Amauri and Mila, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  She was preceded to His heavenly home by her parents, and she was the last survivor of her twelve siblings: Mable Nichols, Johnson Smith, Evelyn Moore, Opal Lane, Clarence Martin, Talmadge Martin, James A. Mitchell, Mary Sue Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, William Mitchell, Elick Mitchell, and Alice Mitchell.

She was known to love dogs, trees, gardening, sewing, embroidery, knitting, raising house plants, bird watching, and her delicious cooking.
